A new workshop series coming to the University at Buffalo this fall aims to meet students where they already are by using artificial intelligence.

"AI Unleashed," developed by Innovative Pedagogy and Creative Spaces Librarian Cynthia Tysick, launches Sept. 2 and runs through Dec. 2, 2026, offering six hands-on sessions designed to help undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff, become more confident, critical users of AI tools.

"These tools are being used by students right now, even if they don't always admit to it," Tysick said. "It's up to educators to address these AI tools, show what their weaknesses and strengths are and help our students become critical thinkers and savvy AI users. Employers are expecting this now, and we need to deliver."

What sets AI Unleashed apart from other AI training, Tysick said, is its hands-on, project-based approach. Rather than simply introducing tools, each session puts them directly in attendees' hands, encouraging participants to apply what they learn to actual coursework or personal projects.

"Students will actually be using AI tools and playing with them using projects they may have for a course or something they might be working on for their own interest," she said.

The series takes an all-inclusive view of the AI landscape, walking attendees through the full arc of an academic or professional project, from research and writing to presentation and job-seeking, with sessions held every other week throughout the fall semester.

While the series is built with students in mind, Tysick said there is no assumed skill level, and each session offers value regardless of where someone is in their academic career. Faculty and staff are also welcome to attend.

"Undergraduate first-year students will get a jump-start on AI at UB, while graduates will get exposed to some tools that will help them craft a literature review or land a job," she said.

All sessions are free and open to the UB community. Registration is available through the UB Libraries website. Sessions are held every other Tuesday, beginning Sept. 2, 2026.
