Butterick (George F.) papers

The George F. Butterick papers comprise personal and business correspondence, poetry and prose manuscripts by Butterick and others, notes and research materials, photographs, ephemera, other printed material, clippings and artwork. Material primarily originates from the United States, although the collection includes some material from Canada, Germany, Italy and Sweden. The vast majority of material dates from Butterick's lifetime (1942-1988), thoughthe collection includes items spanning 1931 to 2012.

Collection material reflects Butterick's various roles within poetic and scholarly communities: student and teacher, scholar and poet, author and publisher, mentor and mentee. The depth and breadth of Butterick's decades-long dedication to studying Charles Olson can be found throughout the collection, although his papers also indicate scholarly interests beyond Olson, including various forms of modern and postmodern poetry, especially experimental modes. The collection also contains a significant amount of material related to Butterick's personal life and his family members.
