Joyce (James, Emily Tall collection on)
The Emily Tall collection on James Joyce documents the translation and reception history of Joyce's work in Soviet-era Eastern and Central Europe. Tall's papers consist of the research material and correspondence she gathered on the subject, including translations and scholarly criticism of Joyce published in periodicals, along with Tall's own notes and manuscripts. The collection has a particular focus on the Russian translation of Ulysses begun by Viktor Khinkis, but also includes other translations and criticism in Russian, Georgian, Lithuanian and Polish. Emily Tall (1940-2024) was an American professor and scholar of Russian language and literature who specialized in the reception of Western writers in the Soviet Union. At the time of her death, Tall was associate professor emeritus of Russian at the University at Buffalo, where she taught from 1980 until her retirement.
